5 Ways To Relax When You Are Overwhelmed

If you have been very overwhelmed with your life lately...you can probably feel it taking a toll on your mental health and wellbeing. Before you let the overwhelm take control of your life, try some of these unique tips for relaxing and reducing stress. My personal favorite is #5!

1. Complete Something You Never Finished
A way to relieve overwhelm in your life is to think about something you have not completed yet... and finish it. This can be anything big or small.

Why is this helpful? Because you get a feeling of accomplishment when you complete something. Even a small thing you have been putting off, a little home project you started but didn’t complete, can bring you that feeling of satisfaction from taking something off of your to-do list.

What unfinished project are you going to tackle?

2. Visualize What You Want
Visualization is a potent stress-relief tool. When you can see something you want to accomplish, it gives you inspiration and motivation to get it done.

You can even try visualizing a relaxing scene, like a day at a beach or at a luxurious spa. Allow your imagination to be creative and fill in all the details. See how relaxed you feel.

3. Prioritize Sleep Routines
Everyone needs sleep! This should be one of your top priorities, especially if you feel stress or overwhelm. If you don’t get enough quality sleep, start looking at your sleep routine. Maybe you need to start getting ready for bed earlier, shut off screens sooner, or listen to a sleep meditation from an app like InsightTimer. I love the sleep music on InsightTImer. My favorite one is called Deep Sleep by Chris Collins.

4. Find Your Own Priorities
Choosing to find your own priorities in your life is crucial for relaxing when you feel stressed and overwhelmed. This is true in your personal and professional life. A big part of self-care and relieving that feeling of overwhelm is knowing when to put yourself first.

It can be hard to put yourself first if you are not used to doing it. Start by looking at your calendar and seeing where you can block out small chunks of time for yourself. If you struggle make yourself a priority get support from a trusted friend, coach, or therapist.

5. Start Your Day With a Power Hour
This one is my favorite! Morning routines help set you up for success for the day ahead. They provide you a way to be energized and positive right from the moment you wake up, keep you from developing a negative attitude when the alarm goes off, and give you time for a little self-care.

Start a new morning routine that is good for your body and mind, with things like doing yoga, drinking a glass of water, writing in your journal or planner, meditating, or practicing mindfulness. There are no rules for a morning routine as long as it is good for you and helps you feel invigorated and ready to take on the day.
